Business April 20, 2025

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lay the foundation stone for a major thermal power plant in Salboni, Paschim Medinipur on Monday. The project, worth ₹16,000 crore, is being developed by JSW Energy and is the biggest private sector investment in the state’s core sector in the last 14 years.

The power plant will have a capacity of 1600 MW, consisting of two 800 MW units. The land for the project was originally meant for a steel plant by JSW Group in 2008, but that plan was cancelled. Now, the same site will see new industrial development. JSW already runs a cement-grinding unit in Salboni and owns a large piece of land there.

This project is expected to boost the local economy and create many job opportunities. Mamata Banerjee will reach the Jindal factory premises in Jambedia by helicopter to officially start the project. JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindalwill also be present.

After the ceremony, the Chief Minister will stay at Medinipur Circuit House and hold an administrative meeting the next day at Medinipur College grounds to discuss more development plans for the region.
