Suvendu Adhikari’s Remarks Spark Controversy in Bengal Assembly

Politics March 13, 2025

BJP leader and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has stirred controversy with his statement that Muslim MLAs will be thrown out of the Assembly when the BJP comes to power. His remark came during protests over the suspension of BJP MLAs from the Assembly.

Muslim MLAs from the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), including Humayun Kabir and Siddiqullah Chowdhury, strongly opposed his statement and demanded a withdrawal within 72 hours, warning of consequences otherwise. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned Adhikari’s remarks, accusing the BJP of promoting communal politics. The Treasury Benches tabled a censure motion against Adhikari.

BJP legislators, dressed in black, protested against the motion, arguing that Adhikari was suspended and had not made the statement inside the House. Adhikari later accused Mamata Banerjee of being anti-Hindu, referencing her absence from the Ram Mandir consecration.

Congress leader Ali Imran Ramz has filed a police complaint against Adhikari for his communal remarks. Meanwhile, the BJP’s Chief Whip Sankar Ghosh expressed concerns about Adhikari’s safety inside the Assembly. The controversy has intensified political tensions in the state.
